Preparing for Your Cake Smash & Splash Session

If you’re booked in for a Cake Smash & Splash session with Sweetness Photography, this guide will help you get the most out of your experience. These sessions are one of my absolute favourites to photograph — full of giggles, curiosity, and those wonderfully messy moments that perfectly capture your baby’s personality as they turn one.

The Setup

All cake smash sessions are styled in my signature white, neutral setup — simple, timeless, and focused entirely on your baby. This clean backdrop keeps your images classic and lets all the joy and sweetness shine through.

You don’t need to choose a theme or bring decorations — everything is ready for you when you arrive.

What to Wear

I have a selection of beautiful client closet options available for your baby to wear during the session. These pieces are soft, comfortable, and perfectly suited to the neutral aesthetic of the setup.

If you’d prefer to bring your own outfit, choose something simple in white, cream, or light neutrals. Avoid bright colours or bold patterns so your baby remains the star of the photos.

If parents or siblings will join in for a few photos, coordinating tones like white, beige, or soft pastels always photograph beautifully together.

What to Bring

You really don’t need to bring much — I have most things covered.

Here’s what I recommend packing:

  • A change of clothes for your baby (and possibly for you too)
  • Snacks and water in case your little one needs a quick break
  • A comfort item or toy if it helps them relax

I have towels and everything needed for the splash portion here in the studio. The bath is filled with warm water only — no bubble bath or soap — to avoid any irritation on delicate skin.

The Cake

I provide a simple, baby-friendly cake that matches the neutral aesthetic of the session. These cakes are soft, lightly frosted, and easy for little hands to explore.

If your child has any allergies, dietary sensitivities, or you’d simply prefer to avoid cake altogether, I also offer a faux cake option. This allows us to capture the same joyful, playful images - minus the sugar - and is a wonderful alternative for families who need or prefer it.

In the week or two leading up to your session, I recommend offering your baby a small iced cupcake at home. This helps them get used to the sweetness and texture of icing and cake, so it feels familiar on the day. Babies who have had a little taste beforehand often feel more confident and curious when their big cake moment arrives.

What to Expect

We’ll begin with a few classic portraits before the cake is introduced — these milestone images are a lovely way to mark your baby’s first birthday.

Then it’s time for the cake! Some little ones dive right in, while others take their time, gently exploring the textures and tastes. Every reaction is perfectly them — and always makes for beautiful photos.

After the cake fun, we’ll move on to the splash portion — a warm bath in a tiny tub. It’s the perfect way to clean up and usually brings out even more smiles!

A Few Final Tips

  • Try to plan your session around your baby’s nap so they’re well-rested and happy.
  • Give them a light snack before arriving, but not a full meal — we want them curious about the cake!
  • Don’t worry if they don’t “smash” the cake right away — every baby is different, and their natural reactions are what make the session special.
  • Most importantly, enjoy it! Your baby will sense your calm energy, and the more relaxed you are, the more fun they’ll have.

Your baby’s first birthday is such a special milestone, and I’m honoured to capture these once-in-a-lifetime memories for you. Cake Smash & Splash sessions are joyful, natural, and beautifully simple — a perfect reflection of this sweet stage in your little one’s story.
