What even is a sitter session?

A sitter session is a special milestone photography session designed for babies who can sit independently but aren’t yet walking, typically between 6-9 months old.

This stage is full of curiosity, joy, and adorable expressions, making it the perfect time to capture their developing personality in timeless images.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your little one’s big day!

How to prepare for a sitter session

1. Timing is Everything

Choose a time when your baby is usually happy and well-rested. Most babies are at their best in the morning after their first nap. If you have a set routine, let us know so we can schedule accordingly!

Sitter sessions are kept short and sweet—just 30 minutes—as babies at this stage can tire quickly. Keeping the session brief ensures we capture their best expressions while they are still happy and engaged.

2. What to Wear

Simplicity is key! I have a range of outfits that are perfect for these sessions but if you prefer to bring your own, here are some tips for choosing outfits:

  • Soft, neutral, or pastel tones photograph beautifully
  • Avoid bold patterns, logos, or overly bright colors that may distract from your baby’s expressions
  • Rompers, bloomers, or simple onesies work well
  • Bare feet and nappy covers add an adorable, timeless touch

3. Set the Mood

Your baby will pick up on your energy, so keep things light and fun! We’ll have gentle music and a relaxed atmosphere, but bringing a favourite toy, stuffed animal, or comfort item can also help your baby feel at ease. It’s also important to stay calm and avoid overstimulating your baby. Too many outfit changes, loud noises, or excessive excitement can make them fussy. A relaxed, low-key atmosphere helps bring out their natural smiles and curiosity.

4. Snacks and Breaks

Little tummies get hungry quickly! Bring a small snack and water or milk for quick breaks if needed. Avoid messy snacks that could stain outfits or faces.

5. Parents, Be Camera-Ready Too!

Even if this session is all about your little one, you may need to jump in for a few shots to help your little one feel at ease. Wear neutral, comfortable clothing that coordinates with your baby’s outfit. Soft tones and minimal patterns work best.

6. Trust the Process

Some babies take time to warm up, and that’s okay! We’ll go at your little one’s pace and capture both smiles and sweet, quiet moments. The best images come from natural interactions, so relax, play, and enjoy the session.

7. After the Session

Your baby’s portraits will be professionally edited and available in an online gallery within four weeks.

You’ll receive details on how to view, download, and order prints to cherish these precious memories forever!
